I’ve recently been introduced to a line of makeup I have not used before called Thrive Causemetics and can I just say that I’m in love! The two products I’ve picked up from Thrive Causemetics have soared up to all-time favorites in my collection! I definitely will be trying more from their range, but let me tell you about my awesome finds and why I’m so impressed with this brand!
This product literally blew my socks off! I’ve been a long-time user of the Anastasia Brow Wiz but this liner is now the one I’m using every day! It gives a very natural look and the packaging is a bit more durable than the Brow Wiz (the spoolies always break off on me and I don’t like how the caps crack.) It boasts “Buildable Smart Pigments” that adjust to the right shade for your brow and ingredients that encourage brow growth, which I certainly need. I’ve been using this for about a month now and absolutely love it! I feel the shade is a better match to my brow than some of the other products I have tried, it has great wear time and looks natural! Also I like the packaging. They have a clear cap over the spoolie vs. the pencil itself which other products I’ve used do not have and the overall packaging is very sturdy.
If you’ve read some previous posts, then you know that a few months ago I tried lash extensions. I liked how they looked, but the long-term maintenance and cost made me decide to not continue to use them. Also, once all the extensions came off, I noticed that my natural lashes were not as long and strong as they were before. I had heard some good things about this mascara and decided to give it a try and I was NOT disappointed! Something about this wand literally finds every lash, even ones you didn’t even know you had and looks so nice with no clumps or flakes. It also has an ingredient called Orchid Stem Cell complex that is supposed to help lashes grow and stay strong. I absolutely LOVE it!
About the Brand
There are so many great makeup brands out there, but what touched me as unique and special about this one is that for every product that is purchased, Thrive Causemetics donates one to a woman in need. Women fighting cancer or victims of domestic abuse are some that are helped by this brand and I love that they have a greater purpose than just the makeup. Their slogan of “Beauty with a Purpose” is something that they truly bring to life. Some of their products are even named after some of the courageous women that they have helped! The brand is vegan and 100% cruelty free, which is another quality I like to see in makeup!
The countdown to Christmas is on! This is the time of year that I rock my red lips and nails! I’ve gathered up five of my favorite red lipsticks to share and hopefully get you in a festive mood!
NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in “Cruella” $27- The NARS lip pencils are awesome because you have a liner and lipstick all in one. And, with red, staying neat around the edges of your lips can be a challenge, and with a bold color like this, it has to look right! This is a deeper red, with more brown/burgundy in it. NARS describes it as a scarlet red. It has a matte finish and is long-wearing, which is a plus. I don’t find this formula to be drying, as can happen with some matte shades. If you really like this formula, they do have some other shades in the red family to choose from as well.
Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche in “Gazpacho” $26- Bite Beauty is a brand known for using natural, edible ingredients in their products, so I feel good putting their lipsticks and balms on my lips. The Amuse Bouche line is very popular and has tons of different shades but the Gazpacho is a beautiful bright bluish red. This lipstick will absolutely light up your face and give you a festive look. The formula is extremely moisturizing and has a slight sheen to it.
Colour Pop Lippie Stix in “Trust Me” $5- If you’ve read my other posts, then you know I love the Colour Pop brand! It’s priced along a drug store brand but available online. Hey for $5, this is actually a better price than some drugstore lipsticks! Recently Sephora has started carrying their line as well, but this shade is not available there. The lippie stix are small, longer shaped lipsticks that look like a fat pencil, which I like for throwing in my bag. Also, the small tip allows for more control when applying, because, as I mentioned earlier, red is a color that needs to be applied precisely to your lips to look its best. Of all the reds, I think this shade is the truest red – again this is a VERY matte formula, so if you don’t care for matte formulas, that’s ok, the next two I am sharing are very shiny!
Maybelline “Crimson Rush” $5.59- I love this formula and you can get this right in the drugstore. It has a satin finish but does wear well. The red shade has a slight pink undertone. This exact shade was a limited edition but there are a couple of new red shades in this collection that are worth checking out!
Tarte Lip Sculptor in “Pride” (set $34)- This was part of a lip sculptor gift set I bought from tarte and I was so pleasantly surprised that such a gorgeous holiday red was included! If you aren’t familiar with the lip sculptor, it is a dual -sided lipstick – one side the lipstick, the other a colored gloss. This color is gorgeous with just the lipstick side, but when you add the gloss – BAMM! Your lips are so plump and shiny looking you will be party-ready in a snap. Plus the packaging on this (a Moroccan-themed pattern is on the lipstick) is so beautiful! Unfortunately this shade is not sold individually, but I can tell you the set has four other shades that are beautiful and wearable.
What kind of makeup/ red lipsticks do you like to wear around the holidays? I would love to read your comments! Happy Holidays everyone.
Do you know that feeling when you buy an eyeliner and it just flatters you in a special way? Well, that’s how I feel about these five eyeliners. I have hazel eyes, so, for me, colors in the burgundy family really make them pop. Do you remember learning the color wheel in school? Well, basically you look for colors opposite each other on the color wheel to determine what best complements your eye color. Blue eyes usually look great with shadows/liners in the gold or copper family, for example. Have brown eyes? Well, you’re in luck because most colors look great on brown eyes!
Everyone’s eyes are so unique that even two people with hazel eyes might not experience the same result but I can tell you that these liners are awesome!
MAC Costa Riche – This liner is in the brown family but is just warm enough to give those eyes a pop! I use it in the upper water line also to intensify the effect.
Tarte Amazonian clay Smolder Eyes in Aztec Gold – I was not sure if this liner would work on me since it is an olive greenish color and usually using a similar color as your eyes actually washes out your look. However, I think the flecks of gold in this color are what do the trick as I have some gold in my eyes. It is definitely a smoother formula than the MAC pencil. I use this in my lower water line and smudge under my lash line as well. Unfortunately Tarte doesn’t have this on their website any more, but I did find it on Amazon.
Estee Edit Eye Kajal in Bold Bordeaux – This is a gorgeous deep wine color and has the added benefit of a dual sided pencil with a nude color on the other side. I use the nude color to brighten the inner rims of my eyes and the bottom waterline (this makes you look so awake even on days you really aren’t) and I smudge the Bordeaux color on my lower lash line and upper water line. This used to be available on Sephora but is not any more. I want to order a few as back ups I love it so much!
Urban Decay 24/7 in Alkaline – This is in the burgundy family but has a stronger reddish undertone, so it’s less subtle than the other shades. It can give a slightly reddish look which to some would be unflattering (no one wants to look like they have pink eye) but I like the effect it gives. (BTW, the Urban Decay lip liners are bomb dot com too, but that’s a whole different blog post!)
Maybelline Lasting Drama in Striking Copper – this is a beautiful shimmery copper that is so nice for the holidays! I usually line it under something matte to give the eyes a more festive look. I think it’s a bit too light to use on it’s own but it is a unique color that I was excited to find in the drugstore! I think this color would also look stunning on blue eyes!
There have been so many new palette releases lately that can make it confusing to select one that best suits you, but I bought the Tartelette Toasted palette and feel like I have hit the jackpot on palettes! This is not the first product I have purchased and loved from Tarte. If you are not familiar with the brand, Tarte is a cosmetics company that is cruelty-free and vegan friendly. Their products are formulated without harmful ingredients such as parabens, mineral oil, phthalates and sodium laurel sulfate. This is an added bonus in my book!
Similar to many other palettes that have been released lately, this one provides 12 warm-toned shades, with a blend of shimmers and mattes. I personally love warmer shades as they tend to best complement my hazel eyes. However, I think these colors would really enhance blue, green or brown eyes as well. This is the first palette I’ve ever owned where I can say that I have used and loved every single shade! I start out with the best of intentions every time I buy a palette, but always end up having a shade or two that I really don’t like or that isn’t wearable for me on a day-to-day basis. Also, I love that I can achieve a complete eye look using just this palette. I hate when I have to jump from palette to palette to hunt for different colors to complete an eye look. I don’t have the time or the patience for that!
The packaging of this palette is amazing! It is a great size for travel, has a generous sized mirror and is very sturdy. The front looks like a warm, cozy fire with gold letters, and when you open it up, there is a faint yummy fragrance that makes it even more delicious!
As for the quality of the shadows, Tarte does not disappoint. They use their Amazonian clay formula which is long-lasting and the shadows blend nicely. Some of the shades are a little powdery but I have not experienced any issues with fallout on my face as I apply them. I’ve had this palette over a month now and have used it almost every day that I’ve worn makeup. There is no black shade with could be a con for some, but I use the color “Fireside” as an eye liner and it has worked great for me. Also, there is a rich chocolate brown shade called “Crackle” that might look a bit intimidating as it has gold flecks of sparkle in it, but I find that it is still a very wearable color on the eye. The sparkles don’t translate like the other shimmer shadows so it can be daytime appropriate.
The palette retails for $46, which is in range for a lot of the newer palettes out there, but for me, it is worth the splurge because the shades are wearable, versatile and flattering. Yes, you can achieve more dramatic looks as well as daytime looks, but for me, daily looks are what I most use in my lifestyle and this palette has been such a treat to use! Let me know if you’ve tried this and what you think.
Recently Rihanna debuted her own cosmetics line called Fenty Beauty, complete with foundations in all shade ranges, highlighters you can see from outer space and some lip products. She even has a holiday collection out now that you can check out if you like some edgier makeup. I’ve been checking out reviews for her products and they are very up and down. It makes me wonder if people really don’t like them but are afraid to be brutally honest because they are a Rihanna fan? Not sure. But I did go ahead and purchase this universal lip gloss (Fenty Glow Gloss Bomb – Universal Lip Luminizer, $18) that had a great neutral color and seemed, unlike a lot of the other products, to have consistently positive reviews.
First off, let’s talk about the packaging. I absolutely LOVE it! I prefer a shorter, fatter size versus a long skinny gloss. For me, it fits better into a lot of different size purses so it’s great for travel or just daily on-the-go! The color is great – it’s a warm neutral that can be worn alone, with some lip liner, or as a topper for a lipstick. Let me tell you, this gloss is SHINY! I love it, because I have thin lips, so shiny glosses and lipsticks help them to look plumper. The gloss is not glittery, but does have some flecks in it. This has a smell to it – to me it smells just like the pink Starburst candies. It is not unpleasant but I’d prefer no smell or more of a vanilla scent. It does not linger so it’s not a deal breaker for me.
So I found a really good dupe for this gloss, really by accident. Loreal has their Infallible Pro Gloss and the shade 825 or Dulce De Leche is almost identical to the Fenty Gloss. This drugstore gloss is pricey for drugstore at $11.79. The small differences I’ve observed are that the Loreal is a tad bit more sparkly and the formula is slightly stickier than the Fenty. Size-wise, the Loreal tube has .21 fl. oz. and the Fenty is .30 fl. oz. so you are paying more, but you are also getting a bit more product.
So, which do I like better? I think I prefer the Fenty gloss but both are really nice. I just like the formula and packaging of the Fenty a little more. Hopefully this review will help you if you are in the market for a new gloss. I am not disappointed with my Fenty Beauty purchase. Have you tried any Fenty Beauty products yet? If so, I’d love to know your honest thoughts!
I am so excited that I found my holy grail highlighter!!! If you are over 40 like me, then you might like a highlighter like this that doesn’t make you look like you are going to a club, but gives a subtle healthy glow to your face. Easy to apply and wearable every day is another prerequisite I have when looking for a highlighter. Also, a product that does not accentuate texture or wrinkles is a big PLUS. Well, I’ve found the product that does all of this! Let me introduce you to Charlotte Tilbury’s Beauty Light Wand. I purchased this product about a month ago and have been using it nonstop ever since!
It retails for $38 and comes in a tube with a sponge applicator. This makes it so easy to apply and its packaging allows for easy travel too. Just swipe on in the areas you want to highlight and either blend with your fingers or a beauty sponge. There is only one shade and I would describe it as a beautiful pearly champagne which is a great universal shade. A little goes a very long way and what I think is so unique about this is the way it looks. It isn’t glittery or chunky but gives the skin an almost wet look, like a natural glow (not greasy). And it’s noticeable but not “in your face” glowing. Since this is a cream product, you should apply to your face before setting with powder for the best result.
There is a contour wand by Charlotte Tilbury that was released with the highlight, but I don’t really like it as much. I like the ease of application and blendability, but I don’t think it really shows up on my face at all and it doesn’t have the same WOW factor that the highlight has.
So, if you are in the market for a new highlighter, I’d definitely recommend checking it out. I am really enjoying this product and plan to buy more as it’s really hard to find highlighters that are suitable for more mature skin.
I know everyone likes a bargain and I am here to tell you, in the world of makeup, there are fantastic quality products right in the drugstore! I’ve rounded up my favorite eye shadow palettes from the drugstore to share with you. These palettes will give their high-end competitors a real run for the money!
I talked about this palette in my round up of the best e.l.f. products here. This palette has 10 matte shadows all in beautiful warm colors. If you prefer cooler tones they also have the palette available in other shades. This one is my absolute favorites – I reach for it all the time and travel with it also! It has enough of a range of colors to complete an entire look with just this palette (I personally don’t love jumping around to a bunch of different palettes for one eye shadow look). The colors blend well and are very pigmented. And all this can be yours for $10!
This is the newest addition to my collection. I reviewed some Kokie products when they first debuted at Walmart here. This palette is also available in a variety of shade ranges but I selected cooler tones – this has a combination of matte, shimmer and satin shades. Similar to the e.l.f. palette, you can create one full shadow look with just this palette. I do like having some shimmers to take you from day to night and the palette is small enough to make it easy to throw it in your purse. This retails for $9.97.
These Covergirl palettes have been around awhile and I still reach for them constantly! The quality of the shadows is unmatched for a drugstore brand. They feel so soft and buttery just like you would experience in a much more expensive palette. Each palette comes with 8 shadows in a variety of shimmers and mattes. The Roses palette has all purple shades and the Goldens has your creams and brown shades. The packaging is nothing special with these, but the quality of the products inside is truly special. If you don’t have these then head to your nearest drugstore and grab them today! You won’t be disappointed!
OK, so I might be cheating a little because ColourPop is not available in drugstores (although they are going to be available at Sephora in the near future!), but the price range is equivalent to drugstore and the quality is equivalent to a luxury palette! The shade selection in this palette is very unique. It has warm colors (again, that is my personal preference with hazel eyes) that range from light peach to plummy browns and some golden shade in between. This palette also offers shimmers along with matte shades and many different looks can be created with these 12 shades. At $16, this is the most expensive of the palettes, but you are getting 12 high quality shadows at a fraction of the price of most higher end palettes. This is a great up-and-coming brand to keep your eye on!
What eye palettes are you loving from the drugstore – I’d love to know!
I know I’m a beauty junkie, but I may be one of the few who really isn’t into foundation. I don’t know what it is, but I always feel like it looks cakey and makes me look older than I am (which trust me, I DON’T need). However, I do like something to just even out my skin tone and make the rest of my makeup look put together. That is why I love BB and CC creams! I find that they improve the overall appearance of my skin without feeling or looking heavy and “made-up”. So here’ s a round-up of 5 favorites in my collection right now!
IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better ($38)- If you aren’t crazy about foundation but feel you need to use it because you need full coverage with your skin makeup, then this is definitely the product for you! This not only color-corrects, but really has great coverage, and is available in 7 shades. I use this on days that I may have a blemish or something extra that needs some covering. In addition to all that, it has an SPF of 50+. Another feature I love with the packaging of this product is that it has a pump! A lot of BB or CC creams usually come in tubes, but I think a pump is so much easier to use. This product was also recognized by Allure
Erborian BB Cream ($39)- This is a Korean Skin Care line and this product, similar to the IT cosmetics one, also has pretty awesome coverage! It also has sunscreen in it (SPF 20). This product is known for its use of ginseng which is a natural ingredient known for its moisturizing and smoothing properties. There are only three shades available in this product and at the time I bought it only the medium shade was available so I typically use this product in the summer months when I am self-tanning and want my complexion to look a little darker. It promises to give a non-oily, velvety finish and in my experience, it lives up to this promise.
Osmosis CC cream ($44)- This is the newest product in my collection. Osmosis is a medical grade skin care line that also has makeup products that contain “good for you” ingredients. It claims to help reduce age spots and smooth skin discoloration. It also comes with a pump in it s packaging and it promises to soften, lift and illuminate. I’m not sure about the “lift” part, but it has a very natural finish and I do believe it blurs out flaws and does give a healthy look. It comes in various shades, but when you initially pump it out, it looks white and then as you apply it changes to your skin tone. This one, unlike the others, does NOT contain any SPF, so I always use another SPF when applying this.
Burt’s Bees BB Cream ($11)- This is an awesome drug store find that I literally just stumbled upon when I was shopping for something else. I had never seen a face makeup product by this brand, which I love, so I had to check it out. This product does not disappoint! It has a light, comfortable feel on the skin and does a good job evening out skin tone. It also contains an SPF of 15. I feel good wearing this knowing that it contains more natural ingredients as well. The shade range is also limited to light/medium or medium/dark.
Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydrating Gel Cream ($30) – This is another one of my favorite products! When my skin is dryer in the winter, I like to use this for the extra hydration it provides. It goes on nicely and is light on the skin with light coverage. It has a wider range of shades with 30 available and has SPF 30. It promises to blend the best of a BB and CC cream in one and I believe that it fulfulls this promise. I use the shade Vanilla 02. (I actually finished my tube of this which is why it is not photographed here.)
Do you like BB and CC Creams? I’d love to hear which ones are working for you right now!
If you read my post last week, you already know that fall is my favorite season! I’ve recently cleaned out my makeup and found all my favorite fall lipstick shades that I love to wear. They range from drugstore to high end. If you love mauvy-browns, rust orange and berry shades, then this is the place for you!
Maybelline Matte in “Touch of Spice” ($5.50)- The best way I can describe the color is a rosy brown. It is so beautiful on. It really lights up your whole face! This is matte, so it is not shiny but it is comfortable to wear and not drying to your lips. I also like that this formula does stay on the lips. You will need to reapply after meals.
Colour Pop “Frick N Frack” ($6.00)- Colour Pop is a newer brand that is only available online currently (it will become available at Sephora in the near future). They are based in CA and have great quality products at drugstore prices! This shade is a deeper brownish-pink and a demi matte (there is a little shine). This is their ultra satin lip formula which is my personal favorite. Very matte lipsticks are not the most flattering on more mature lips like mine. This is super long lasting on the lips!
Loreal Infallible Paints in “Taupeless” ($6.29)- This is the coolest toned shade in these lipsticks. I personally gravitate more toward warm shades with my makeup but this cool toned purply-taupe is so unique and this formula is really nice to wear! I also really like the packaging of these lipsticks – they are in a tube and have a unique shaped applicator that really conforms to the shape of your lips for easy application.
Wet N Wild Liquid Catsuit in “Give Me Mocha” ($4.99)- I spoke about this lip product in a review of some Wet N Wild products and am still loving this! This is in the warm pink-brown family, similar to the color pop “Frick N Frack” but a shade lighter. With neutral eye shadows like browns and golds this really puts a finishing touch on a fall makeup look.
Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Liquified Lip in “Chutney” ($24.00)- This is a product I just purchased about a month ago and LOVE it. This brand is known to use more natural ingredients in their products and this formula is so hydrating on the lips I love wearing it! It also has long lasting wear. The color is on the mauve side but not as brown as the other shades I’ve talked about.
Too Faced Melted Liquified Long Wear Lipstick in “Chihuahua” ($21.00)- This is another mauvy tone but is cooler and more purple than the Bite Beauty product. I love how this smells and it has a dispenser that squeezes out just the right amount of product to apply to your lip. I like the tube packaging – it’s really easy to take with you.
Colour Pop “Beeper” ($6.00)- This is a deeper more brownish purple shade which is great if you like a bold, dark lip. A lot of the mauvy shades on this list are daytime wearable, but this one is a bit darker, so it’s really personal preference depending on how you like to wear your lip colors. This is a different formula than the Frick N Frack color mentioned before. This is a super matte formula. It’s not my favorite formula but it does look great on and is comfortable to wear. As I’ve mentioned, with other Colour Pop lip products, it is great quality for a great price and the colors are extremely long wearing.
Smashbox Always on Liquid Lipstick in “Out Loud” ($24.00)- This is my FAVORITE fall shade and definitely breaks the mold of the other colors in my round up. It is a burnt orangy brown that is just stunning on the lip. It reminds me of pumpkin spice and everything nice about fall! It is a very wearable orange shade and it more deep than bright but is so unique I just love it! It is a matte liquid lip so it is not shiny but is extremely long wearing.
Colour Pop in “Lyin King” ($6.00)- Now we are moving on to my berry shades which I love to wear in the fall. This liquid lip is a bright vibrant berry shade. If I’m feeling tired and put this color on, it immediately brightens my whole face! With a brighter lip I like to keep things simple on my eye makeup for a quick get ready and out the door look.
Charlotte Tilbury Hell’s Bells ($34.00)- This is the most expensive lipstick on this list. First, the packaging is STUNNING. It is a traditional solid lipstick in a beautiful rose gold tube, that makes you feel like a movie star just having it out on your vanity! It is also in the berry/burgundy family but is a more matte formula. Sometimes I prefer to use a tube of lipstick instead of a liquid lipstick so I keep this handy for those days.
Phew, that was a lot of lipsticks! Did you see any that you like? What are your go-to lipstick colors for the fall? I’d love to hear from you.

Packing for any trip can be daunting, but how can you decide what make-up products are most important to bring on vacation without lugging your entire collection? It’s important to think about the season, your destination and what you will be doing to help sort out what to bring. Also, if you separate your products into categories as I have below, that can also help you stay on track. I recently returned from a week at the Jersey shore, and want to share what I brought along. It turned out to be the perfect amount of items; I didn’t forget anything and didn’t over pack!
I brought one eye palette, the e.l.f. Mad for Matte 2. This is a great travel-friendly size and has all the neutral warm shades I love that can make many great summery looks! If I was going out to dinner, I’d do a whole look with it, but for a quick look, I’d just use a little light brown color in my crease and I’d be done! If you want to know my other e.l.f. cosmetics favorites, you can check out that post here. The elf palette has a black and dark brown color which can be used as eyeliner, but I also threw the Estee Edit Inside Track Eye Kajal in 02 Bold Bordeaux. This is a double ended liner with the bordeaux color on one side (beautiful for green or hazel eyes) and a cream color on the other which I use to brighten my lower water line and inner corner of the eye. This is the quickest and easiest way to make you look awake and alert. (Another mini palette that’s great for travel is the Tartelette tease palette. It has six shadows and is no bigger than a credit card holder.) For my brows, I never leave home without Anastasia’s Brow Wiz. For mascara, I am currently loving Tarte’s Maneater. It’s not waterproof but I usually don’t care for waterproof formulas in general. For my other favorite mascaras, you can check out this post.
I packed a couple of neutral options and one brighter option. Tarte has a line of lipsticks called color splash lipsticks in a gorgeous turquoise tube! I have the colors “Daiquiri” (coral) and “Sunkissed” (neutral pinky peach). I also have my Kokie cosmetics liquid lipstick Lip Poudre in the shade “Infamous.” For more recommendations on Kokie cosmetics, click here. I brought one lip pencil that works with all the shades – it’s Urban Decay’s 24/7 glide on lip pencil in the shade “Liar.” This is the softest, smoothest pencil I have used and it really helps to keep your lipstick from fading.
Of course my beauty sponge needs to come wherever I am! As for brushes, I try to keep that simple too. I have some travel brushes that I have had for years, but basically bring a couple of eye brushes, one to set powder and highlight, and one for blush/bronzer.
Ready to Go!
So there you have it! I’ve worked to streamline the basics which really had me feeling organized and prepared for anything on my beach vacation. Stay tuned for future blogs on packing that will include packing clothes and beach bags for vacation! Wherever you are headed this summer, I wish you happy packing and fun adventures!
